Back to the Future (1985)

I don't know what to make of all this about the Back to the Future framing fiasco. I bought the trilogy and all discs are copyright 2002 but the second disc also says "V2," which supposedly only happens with the remastered 2003 discs, and the film seems to show the images as they should be (you can see the hoverboard in the chase, the arms on the suit raising the first time it's dried, etc.).
Yet the widescreen and pan and scan versions of the first film--right here--show that the widescreen version lost some vertical information. I'm confused why the studio would go with a soft matte on it instead of just using the full width and full height. Hm....

The pressing date on the discs shows March 2003; I think maybe the studio quit changing the copyright statement and adding the V2 tag.
